EASTPOINTE — Residents throughout Eastpointe have seen progress being made at the former Colonial Dodge site along Stephens Road and Gratiot Avenue.
Eastpointe City Manager Steve Duchane explained the progress on the west side of the development site, where DriveTime Car Sales will have its first dealership in Michigan.
“The city sold the property a couple years ago. Now we have two new developments going on over there. The west side one that was approved by the Planning Commission and council last fall is DriveTime Car Sales,” said Duchane.
“They are remodeling the building so they can bring it up to standards,” he said.
According to Duchane, the east side will be turned into a MySpace Self Storage facility.
“The east side is going to be a storage and related retail space. They haven’t started work over there, but they should be starting in the next couple months,” said Duchane.
Eastpointe Building Official and Director of Community and Economic Development Mary Van Haaren spoke to the Eastsider Feb. 10 about the recent developments.
“(DriveTime is) doing major renovations to the building. Things are going to look real nice and new inside. The exterior building is getting a new facelift. The parking lot will be resurfaced and restriped, and (there will be) new lights going in. So it’s going to look like a brand new facility, and they will sell used cars there,” said Van Haaren.
“They don’t have any plans right now to use the property behind the building that is adjacent to residential backyards up to (DriveTime’s) rear yard that extends maybe 600 feet. If they plan to use it in the future, they will have to come before the Planning Commission again to have that approved,” she said.
Van Haaren said engineering review plans for MySpace Self Storage were finalized to begin construction Feb. 9.
“They will probably begin construction in a few weeks,” said Van Haaren.
Van Haaren estimated DriveTime to be completed in “eight to 10 weeks” and said that MySpace Self Storage will “take longer because they’re building additional buildings,” but she estimated that they will be completed by “next spring.”
Phone calls were made Feb. 9 to MySpace Self Storage representative Todd Clark and DriveTime, but they were not returned in time for publication.
